GESCI and the United Republic of Tanzania sign formal Agreement to accelerate ICT integration in Secondary Schools in Tanzania

GESCI -Global E Schools and Communities Initiative, The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and The President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG) of the United Republic of Tanzania signed MoU on 7th February, 2017.

GESCI- Global E Schools and Communities Initiative , The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and The President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG) of the United Republic of Tanzania signed MoU on 7th February, 2017.

The MoU was signed in Dar- Es Salam Tanzania by Mr. Jerome Morrissey, CEO of GESCI and the Dy. Permanent Secretaries of MoEST and PORALG.

The purpose of this MOU is to:

1) Capitalize on the complementarity between MoEST, PORALG and GESCI in the spirit of furthering the work of the MoEST and PORALG in relation to the integration of ICT for improving the quality of secondary education provision

2) Promote collaboration aimed at transforming secondary schools of the United Republic of Tanzania into Digital Schools of Distinction.

Senior Government officials from MoEST present at the MoU signing were: Paulina K. Mkonongo - Director Secondary Education, Mchikirwa P. Kafumu - Ag. ADQA School Quality Assurance Department, Fredrick Shuma - PEO Teacher Education Unit, Victor Mwesiga - School Quality Assurance Department, Dionice Lukweme – ACO, ICT Department

In addition, GESCI’s Programmes Manager Senthil Kumar and ADSI Project Manager for Tanzania Joyce Msolla were present during the MoU signing.

Other areas of collaboration identified in the MoU include: 

  • Accelerate the integration of ICT in selected secondary schools in the United Republic of Tanzania to enhance the quality of teaching and learning at secondary level educational provision
  • Contribute to equality of access and reduction of gender imbalance in secondary education
  • Enhance the professional and pedagogical capacities of secondary school  teachers and students’ 21st century skills through technology and new pedagogical approaches
  • Advance the development of knowledge societies through  improving the quality of Science, Technology, English and Mathematics (STEM) education in selected secondary schools
  • Enable selected secondary schools to attain Digital Schools of Distinction status.

GESCI and MoEST United Republic of Tanzania have therefore agreed to jointly participate and implement the African Digital Schools Initiative (ADSI) project in Tanzania whereby secondary schools will become Digital Schools of Distinction.GESCI will train 400 STEM teachers and 800 teachers of other subjects in 40 secondary schools in Tanzania.
