GESCI was established in 2003, borne out of the work of the United Nations ICT Task Force which identified education as an area in critical need of development, and one where ICT has the potential to make positive impacts. The UN ICT Task Force approved a proposal for a UN-affiliated organisation to provide demand-driven assistance to developing countries seeking to harness the potential of ICT to improve the quality of teaching and learning in education. GESCI was initially headquartered in Dublin, Ireland from 2003 to 2010 with a regional office established in Nairobi in 2007. In 2010, GESCI sought the patronage of the Government of Kenya to host the headquarters of GESCI as an international organisation. GESCI was granted this status in 2011 and the headquarters subsequently relocated to Nairobi, Kenya.
